Most starfish species are predators, some eat mussels, clams, and oysters or any animal slow enough to be unable to avoid the attack. Some species are decomposers, eating decomposed animal and plant material. The others may consume coral polyps, sponges or even planktons. They may use tube feet capable of extending itself deep into the soft substrata, hauling out the prey.
